CHAPTER 11

"What are you guys doing?" I demanded after we hustled our way behind the stall, Moose suddenly appearing and making a broad path before us.

"Cleaning up, mate," said the drummer.

"Making a killing." The sax player grinned wickedly.

"Some help here," shouted a woman in band merchandise who was in charge of their stall.

"You can't be serious?" said Min. "Your friend, your bandmate, is dead, and you're selling T-shirts?"

"It's what Major Two-Tone would have wanted," said the sax player with a sneer and a haughty huff. "Don't you go judging us."

"He died literally a few minutes ago," I said. "Aren't you worried the killer will get you?"

"Killer?" he asked with a frown. "What are you on about?"

Min and I exchanged a glance, utterly bewildered and with no clue what was going on.

"He got shot with an arrow. He's dead," I explained slowly.

"Yeah, we know. But it was an accident, obviously. Nobody's going to do it on purpose. We were going to go have a beer to calm down after what happened, then Shaz here called us over as everyone wants a T-shirt. What can you do?"

"Guys, I mean it," hollered Shaz. "Come help."

With a shrug, they both went to serve the eager customers, giving them the banter about this being the last time they'd ever be able to buy them. People laughed and joked, clearly believing this was a stunt, but eager to part with their money nevertheless.

Moose raised an eyebrow at us and asked, "What should we do?"

"Leave them to sell their gear, I guess," I said, not knowing what else to say.

We backed away, squeezed through the throng, then bumped into DS Moss with a team of people.

"You again," she hissed.

"What's happening?" I asked. "Everyone seems to think it's pretend. They're buying all the clothes and the other band is playing. The engineer said someone told him to let it go ahead as there was just a fault on the main stage. You aren't going to stop it?"

"I tried," she shouted, actually stamping her foot. "Nobody will listen to me, and I spoke to Benny Nails but he refused to pull the plug. Unless my boss makes some calls, I can't shut it down. But I think it's for the best anyway. It's better if people don't panic. How we're going to find the murderer is what I'm more concerned about. It could be anyone. This place is ridiculous. Look at them. Why are they buying those stupid T-shirts?"

We turned and watched the grinning people clutching their purchases tightly, then I gasped as a woman pulled her T-shirt on over her vest and spun to show her boyfriend, beaming with delight.

"Wait! Look," I said.

"At what?" asked the DS.

"That can't be a coincidence, surely?" asked Min as our eyes met.

"What are you two fools talking about?" she snapped, glancing at the people hanging back beside her, clearly impatient.

"The design on the shirt. Look at it."

"No way," gasped Moose as he lumbered forward and grabbed the man who had slipped his T-shirt on too.
